BWA Launches New Ad Campaign to Protect Kids from Sugary Drinks

In an effort to prevent childhood obesity in Contra Costa County BWA, First 5 Contra Costa and the Healthy and Active Before 5 collaborative, launched a new ad campaign last week that urges parents to protect their kids from sugary drinks and serve them water instead. Sugary drinks like soda, juice, flavored milk and sports drinks are loaded with added sugars and calories that have little or no nutritional value. Kids today consume twice as many calories from these drinks as they did 30 years ago and childhood obesity rates have more than tripled over the same period of time. Obese kids are more likely to become obese adults, putting that at increased risk for heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes and certain types of cancer.

The Sugar Bites ads are running in English and Spanish on BART platforms, transit shelters, convenience stores and check cashing facilities in Concord, Pittsburg, Bay Point, Richmond and San Pablo through August 2013.
