BWA partners with WHO for 2014 World No Tobacco Day

May 31st is World No Tobacco Day, and Better World Advertising (BWA) is proud to partner with the World Health Organization (WHO) for the development of the 2014 campaign “Raise Tobacco Tax – Lower Death and Disease”.

This year’s campaign is a call to action not only to governments to raise tobacco taxes, but also for individuals and civil society organizations to encourage such increases as a means of reducing tobacco consumption and saving lives. According to WHO, raising taxes is particularly effective in lowering tobacco consumption among lower-income groups and in preventing smoking initiation among youth. The World Health Report 2010 revealed that a 50 percent increase in tobacco excise taxes would generate more than US$ 1.4 billion in additional funds in 22 low-income countries, allowing them to increase health spending up to 50 percent.

This global campaign features a short video explaining in simple terms why raising taxes is one of the most effective means of reducing tobacco use throughout the world. BWA also designed a poster and an informational brochure that further explains how taxes and policies on tobacco prices reduce tobacco consumption.

BWA’s partnership with WHO on 2014 World No Tobacco Day is a continuation of our work to achieve health equity on a global scale. The creation of campaigns seeking to eliminate tobacco consumption has long been a part of our efforts to achieve this goal.
