Information is Powerful Medicine at Oakland Pride!
BWA staff took to the streets with local Office for Civil Rights’ staff member Emma Roberts to distribute Information is Powerful Medicine brochures and posters at the Oakland Pride celebration Labor Day weekend. Key campaign messages included:
1. You have the right to request your medical records from your healthcare provider.
2. You don’t have to be HIV-positive to benefit from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
3. You can visit AIDS.gov/privacy for more information.
In addition to members of the community who were impacted by the campaign during the event, numerous healthcare and service providers, HIV activists, and other key players in the HIV arena also became aware of the campaign. Billboards, transit shelters and print ads were placed the month of the event. The mission of Oakland Pride is to celebrate the cultures and diversity of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community in Oakland, California and the East Bay.
